What happens when sustainable technology meets messy, everyday life?
June 18th, 2025, I defended my PhD: Designing with improvisations: How everyday practices with technologies shape sustainable transitions
At my defence, we discussed changes in everyday practices towards sustainability, and how concepts from sociology and anthropology might be helpful in understanding and promoting these changes. Sustainable transitions require changes to everyday practices and design of technologies such as heat pumps. While heat pumps should reduce CO2 emissions and save energy, we explored how households often don’t use them as developers intended. With insights from ethnography, design research, and interviews with professionals, we examined how dominant human-centered design approaches, which prioritize individual users and current practices, fall short in supporting societal transitions. The discussion centered on a “more-than-individual-human-centered” approach that embraces the improvisational nature of everyday life, participation in design outside conventional design studios, changes to organizations and ways of working, and the co-performance of humans and technologies to better support sustainable transitions.

Tijdens mijn verdediging bespraken we veranderingen in dagelijkse praktijken richting duurzaamheid, en hoe ontwerpend onderzoek met concepten uit de sociologie en antropologie nuttig kan zijn voor het begrijpen en bevorderen van deze veranderingen. Duurzame transities vereisen veranderingen in dagelijkse praktijken en het ontwerpen van technologieën zoals warmtepompen. Hoewel warmtepompen CO2-uitstoot zouden moeten verminderen en energie besparen, blijken huishoudens ze vaak niet te gebruiken zoals ontwikkelaars bedoeld hadden. Met inzichten uit etnografie, ontwerponderzoek en interviews met professionals, bekeken we hoe dominante mensgerichte ontwerpbenaderingen, die individuele gebruikers en huidige praktijken prioriteren, tekortschieten in het ondersteunen van maatschappelijke transities. De discussie richtte zich op een “meer-dan-individu-gerichte” benadering die improvisatie in het dagelijkse leven omarmt, participatie in ontwerp en beslissingen, veranderingen in organisaties en werkwijzen, en een betere ondersteuning van duurzame transities.
